The car suddenly wouldn't start at all, so I replaced this and presto - it was fixed! But this new stalling problem has definitely only happened after installing the new distributor...
That could be the problem then, but in response to your other questions:
1) I do have a leaky gasket or something as I have oil in the spark plug tubes...apparently there is still spark though...but I was wondering if this could be causing the problem. This however has been the case for some time I think - even before the distributor cap issue, so I'm inclined to think it's not the source of the new problem.
2) The spark plugs and wires are definitely getting old - I'm being a bit cheap on such items as this car is definitely getting older and I'm not sure I want to go replacing everything like this. Could this be the problem, or is it more likely the distributor cap (and so, should I try that first)?
3) I'll give it a try and see.

Seems like it could be any of the things you suggested at this point, though I haven't tried the ignition switch yet. If you did, I would recommned you have it replaced with Honda original equipment market (OEM) distributor cap and rotor. I've fixed a couple of cars with similar problems due to aftermarket parts.

You should check in the following areas for oil leak:

1) the distributor and the distributor shaft. Remove the distributor and check the shaft to see if it is binding. If it is not binding, the distributor is ok.

2) the spark plugs AND the spark plug wires.

If there's oil leaked in any of these places, it can cause the engine to stall.

3) Check the ignition switch. The ignition could be worn. Try wiggling the ignition key lightly while the engine is running. If wiggling the key stalls the engine, then you have found the source of the problem.

If neither of these 3 places has the problems stated, then please comment back and I will try to further help you troubleshoot the problem.

I have a 1993 Accord...obviously not the newest ca...

I have a 1993 Accord...obviously not the newest car around, but I'm having a very weird problem - the car just dies randomly while I'm driving! This happens when the battery is supplying most of the current for the electrical load instead of the alternator.

Here's why: Early ’90s Honda vehicles come with an electrical load detector (ELD) unit in the under-hood fuse/relay box. The ELD unit allows the engine control module or power control module to regulate the alternator (switch it between high output and low output) to provide the best combination of fuel economy and electrical system operation. The ELD sends a signal to the engine control module or power control module that’s proportional to the electrical demand. One of these modules switches the alternator between high output and low output depending on several factors, which include electrical demand, battery charge level, and the driving cycle. When the alternator is charging, your headlights or dash lights will become brighter.

Hope this information gives you a better understanding of what's causing the lights to become brighter.

I have a Honda 2000 civic LX. The problem is the passenger side door lock actuator. The faulty actuator motor is not strong enough to move. You will need a 12 volt test light to perform an input-test of the door lock actuator connector (2 pin gray connector, yellow/black and yellow wires). To do so, you need to remove the door panel. The yellow/black wire should have 12 volts when you press the lock button and the yellow wire should have 12 volts when you press the unlock button. I read about a fix by resetting the MCU, but I do not know how to do that or it was no explained clearly enough to me. The power windows work fine, but I'm not sure if a hook came loose behind the door panels or if it just needs an electrical reset. Bear in mind that sometimes a replacement of the windshield, if not done properly, can lead to windnoise due to improper installation of moldings, and water leak due to bad installation. I have seen and personally experienced bad windshield installations that cause the car to have the mentioned problems.

If the cracks are at the edge of the windshield (the structural integrity of the glass may be compromised) or anywhere that is in your line of vision (area of repair would leave minor distortion), I would advise that you replace the windshield. If the cracks are just pea sizes and not in these areas, and if the glass specialist advises a repair, then I would repair the chips and not get a complete windshield replacement. The damage resulted in two chips which together are about the size of a quarter. The uppermost chip is pea sized and round, and one side is deeper than the other (apparently the rock hit from an angle). The lower chip is star-shaped and has cracks radiating from the center. The insurance claims person thought we would have to get a full replacement rather than a repair, but the glass technician who came to inspect the damage said he could do either a repair or replacement. My husband was afraid that a full replacement would be riskier because of the size and weight of the windshield, but now he's having second thoughts. Would a full replacement be a safer choice than a repair? Our insurance policy gives us full glass coverage so cost is not a problem. Thank you for any insight you can give us into this matter.

@Upset Honda Owner -
Re: Window problem...I've fix...

@Upset Honda Owner -
Re: Window problem...I've fixed a couple 2003 Accords with the same window problem as yours. It's the window master switch which causes the window to work intermittently. You should check if the driver's window switch button is loose or has excessive looseness when you pull it up. If you can do the repair yourself, it will cost you $140 if you buy the window master switch online vs $190 (parts) + $125 (diagnostic fee) + $45 (installation fee). Please note prices vary at different dealerships.

RE: Gear shifting problem...Check the brake lights first. Press on the brake pedal and check if all the brake lights are on. If brake lights are not working, it could be a bad brake light switch that causes the car not to shift out of park when brake applied. If all the lights are ok, then it could be another electrical problem. Again, this will cost you another $125 for diagnostic. If it's the brake light switch that needs to be replaced, it will cost you about $40 for the parts. If it's not the brake switch, then it will cost you more for other electrical problems.

Is the idle below 900RPM? If it's above 900RPM, the ECM would not let you shift out of park. In this case, you definitely need a diagnostic check on your car.

The cost for repair prices vary depending on the model of your Accord. Do you have a 4 or 6 cylinders?
